Barnes hot tip to play No.10

WALLABIES coach Robbie Deans hasn't yet named a replacement for injured five-eighth Quade Cooper, but the man most likely to fill the void isn't panicking.

Berrick Barnes, who filled in for the dumped Kurtley Beale at fullback in last Saturday's 23-19 win over Argentina, is the strong tip to take over from Cooper.

After Cooper suffered yet another knee injury, Barnes said he believed the playmaking role could be shared for the next Rugby Championship match against the Springboks on September 29.

The match will be at Pretoria's Loftus Versfeld - the Wallabies have never won at the venue in five previous Tests.

"That's the nature of the game at the moment, playing two No.10s either way, whether they're at 10 and 12, or 10 and 15," Barnes said. "You'd like to have that adaptability of two ball-players on the park."

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said as well as Barnes, he was also considering Beale and inside centre Mike Harris for the five-eighth role.

The Wallabies, second in the championship, can finish in that position with wins in their final tournament fixtures over the Springboks and then Argentina in Rosario on October 7.
