Barrie Cassidy resigns from advisory role

THE host of the ABC's Sunday morning current affairs show Insiders, Barrie Cassidy, has resigned from an advisory role over the Old Parliament House in Canberra.

Mr Cassidy, who was appointed the head of the advisory committee by the former Labor Government, resigned on Friday.

His resignation followed a story in The Australian this week, which claimed the job offer was a secret political appointment of the previous Labor Government.

But Mr Cassidy, who was a former president of the parliamentary press gallery and an advisor to Bob Hawke, said the position was voluntary.

Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the current government was playing "petty politics" over the appointment.
He told ABC News the position came with no money or benefits, but he resigned nonetheless to avoid controversy.
