Hervey Bay stars in thriller

THE third movie in as many years to be filmed on the Fraser Coast made its debut at Hervey Bay Big Screen Cinemas on Wednesday.

Following on from Fool’s Gold and Subdivision, shark thriller The Reef terrified the audiences at a special media screening.

The Reef was filmed in Hervey Bay in 2009.

It has a bit of a slow start but when it gets into the action there are plenty of scares.

Five people set sail on a boat that is to be delivered to Indonesia.

But when the yacht capsizes on the barrier reef, the five have to make a decision – stay with the boat or swim to a nearby island.

One decides to stay and the rest decide to go.

What ensues is part action thriller, part psychological thriller.

There’s something about seeing that dorsal fin that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

This particular shark seems to have a real grudge against human beings and stalks the group as they attempt to swim the 12 miles to reach the island.

Their swim is going quite smoothly, despite several in the group not being strong swimmers, when they spot a giant turtle in the water.

The turtle has been mauled by a shark and from that point the film takes a more sinister turn.

The film is entertaining and suspenseful and, as the four swim along trying to reach the island, you do get a strong sense of their vulnerability as they brave the vastness of the ocean.

It’s easy to forget it’s really just the calm blue seas of Hervey Bay.
