Beat the heat and enjoy the great outdoors

NOTHING is more Australian than heading out with family and friends to enjoy a spot of biking, hiking, camping and water-based sports at the various national parks across the country.

Last summer Queensland's parks and forests hosted more than 97,000 campers who spent nearly 312,000 nights and authorities are expecting similar numbers this summer.

National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said on Friday increased recreational opportunities in national parks would improve tourism opportunities for communities and visitors alike.

"There are so many great destinations that are just a short trip from our cities, and we are working to ensure our parks are easier and more accessible for all to enjoy," he said.

"We have opened up new mountain biking trails in many areas across the state this year, including the Promisedland Trail in Cordalba State Forest, and South Molle Island in the Whitsundays.

"If hiking is your thing, you will be reassured that most of the walking tracks in national parks hit by ex-tropical cyclone Oswald in January have re-opened through the year.

"Camping is also a fun and inexpensive way for the whole family to enjoy Queensland's natural beauty and with a quarter of the state's annual camping trips taking place over the summer school holidays.

"Fraser Island, Inskip and Cooloola are always popular, hosting 50% of summer holiday camping last year."

For safety tips and park conditions go to the Queensland or NSW sites and to book a campsite go to the park of your choice where there is often a booking page.
