Bechtel chief jets in to inspect Gladstone LNG projects

HE'S one of the 500 richest people in the world, and on Friday morning Riley Bechtel was having breakfast at Rocksalt.

The Bechtel CEO and chairman was in town to inspect the construction giant's three LNG projects on Curtis Island.

The billionaire is believed to have arrived on a private jet a few days ago.

On Friday morning Mr Bechtel met with local leaders including Gladstone MP Liz Cunningham, Gladstone Regional Council mayor Gail Sellers and deputy mayor Matt Burnett.

Also at the meeting were new Gladstone Ports Corporation chief Craig Doyle, Gladstone harbour master Mike Lutze and Bechtel president of oil, gas and chemicals Jack Futcher.

Mr Bechtel's son Brendan Bechtel is the head of gas for the corporation. He was previously based in Gladstone, working on the QCLNG project.

The three Curtis Island developments, each owned by a different proponent, are together worth more than $60 billion.
