Benji in shock five-man Tigers captaincy group

WESTS Tigers have pulled a shock captaincy selection by naming five co-captains for 2018, including favourite son Benji Marshall.

The co-captains are Marshall, Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer, Chris Lawrence, and Elijah Taylor.

Lawrence and Taylor were considered two of the frontrunners to be named captain, and would have taken the reins from departing skipper Aaron Woods.

But Marshall is the sentimental story of the group, having returned to the club he began his NRL career at more than a decade ago.

He is joined by fellow 2018 recruits Reynolds and Packer.

Cleary would not define exactly how the five-man captaincy group would operate on game day and around the club in general.

"When we started this preseason it was pretty obvious straight away that there was no real pecking order," Cleary said.

"There was no set culture to adhere to. It was all new. That was what I wanted it to be like and that's just how it panned out.

"With this particular team at this time I think it's going to work best to spread that role and allow those blokes to develop in their own way."

It's understood the five players will rotate the duties of leading the team out on game day, as well as attending post-game press conferences.

But who chats to the referees during the game is yet to be decided.

Lawrence and Marshall are the two veterans of the group, but are also not guaranteed a spot in Cleary's best 17 come round one.
