Aunty is planning a big end to 2013

THE ABC has New Year's Eve covered with a mammoth four-hour broadcast from Sydney Harbour.

The special event will feature a variety of entertainment leading up to Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge fireworks display, broadcast the world over each year.

ABC Sport's Stephanie Brantz and ABC2's Dirty Laundry Live host Lawrence Mooney will capture all of the colour and excitement of the city's NYE celebrations as the show's presenters.

"Sydney never fails to put on a spectacular show that's admired around the world, so to have the front row seat will be a huge thrill," Brantz told The Guide.

The sports presenter has rung in the new year everywhere from Switzerland to Sydney.

"One year in Sydney we celebrated with friends who had an amazing place overlooking The Rocks, so we watched all the fireworks explode beneath us which was pretty special. We also walked for two hours afterwards to find a cab home so it's one my feet will never forget!"

The ABC's NYE broadcast will also feature a cast of much-loved ABC stars and characters, including Rake's Richard Roxburgh, funny man Shaun Micallef, Michaela Banas (Upper Middle Bogan), Craig McLachlan (Doctor Blake's Murder Mysteries), Annabel Crabb (Kitchen Cabinet), movie reviewers Margaret and David, the cast of comedy series The Moodys and the teams from The Chaser, Gruen Planet and the new Spicks And Specks.

The show starts at 8.30pm with a live performance by Pete Murray and an official Acknowledgement of Country.

Younger viewers staying up for the 9pm family fireworks display will be treated to appearances by the stars of Giggle and Hoot, Good Game and Studio 3

Then for the adults staying up for the midnight fireworks display there will be performances by Iota, Stonefield and comedian Sammy J and Randy.
