The Block's ticking time bomb: petrol tank stops work

REALITY TV shows often talk of dropping bombshells, but the extent of The Block's real bomb drama was revealed tonight.

The safety of the Glasshouse building site was threatened by a mysterious underground tank.

While the show's construction team, led by site foreman Keith Schleiger, were digging to install footings in the front of the Prahran office block when the tank was discovered.

"If it is a big fuel tank we are in all sorts of trouble," Keith said.

As the contestants blissfully continued work on their en suites, Keith's discovered the building was an Ampol service station in 1974, sparking fears not only of flammable materials but contamination of the surrounding ground.

The tank indeed turned out to be full of an estimated 15,000 litres of fuel (diesel or kerosene).

"We're basically sitting on a bomb," Keith said.

"If that had of exploded, see you later Block. This whole place would have blown up.

"I started really panicking; my heart started pumping really loudly and I was absolutely pooing my pants."

A waste removalist was called in to dispose of the fuel and the EPA took a soil sample off to get tested for contamination.

Meanwhile, Max and Karstan faced the scrutiny from their fellow Blockheads over an audit which revealed they'd underpaid for the tiling of their first bathroom.

Karstan said he wasn't happy the issue, and speculation that he and Max were cheating, was brought up in front of "1.5 million viewers".

The couple agreed to back-pay their tiler, who apparently was charging $27 per hour compared to the industry average of $45 paid by the other couples.

"It's sort of hard to lie on this show because there's a million cameras everywhere," Michael said.
