BMW incinerated in crash

A DRIVER was lucky to escape unharmed after his luxury car smashed into guard rails and burst into flames near the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Tuesday morning.

When firefighters found what was left of an incinerated BMW on the M5 about 3.50am, they thought the worst - but, amazingly, the male driver had survived.

The 20-year-old was found soon after inside the Harbour Tunnel control centre.

He was taken to hospital for observation and mandatory testing.

The bridge's southbound lanes were re-opened just in time for the morning rush.

Investigations are continuing.
