Boats banged up in opener

MACKAY'S two superboats are heading for the repair shop to prepare for the Mackay races on June 23-24 after a wild weekend in the opening round of the Offshore Superboats Championship at Newcastle.

Titleholders Chris and Brendan Frier pushed their Good Guys boat to the maximum in Newcastle at the weekend for a second placing in the Supercat 1000HP class.

In conditions extreme enough to crack a competitor's boat down the side, the Friers' boat also suffered underwater damage from the massive swell through the Newcastle heads.

The boat will head to the Gold Coast to be repaired, after which it will travel home to Mackay ready for some testing at the harbour before the home leg in June.

The former Class One boat Maritimo, which has undergone a transformation this year to race in the Supercat 1000HP class, won the weekend's racing.

"It was the first time we've been back in the boat since December, so it was a great result for us," Chris Frier said.

Another Mackay boat, BBC Digital, had pole position and was leading the pack until it blew a gear box late in the first lap.

It will also be heading back to the workshop to be repaired.

Once the boat is ready to go, it will also run some testing out of the harbour in the hope of being ready to put on a great performance in the home race in Mackay in late June.
