Book says Abbott staff stalled choppergate apology

TONY Abbott's office asked former Speaker Bronwyn Bishop to hold off apologising for using taxpayer money to charter a private jet to a Liberal Party fundraiser, a new book claims.

Political commentator Niki Savva's book, Road to Ruin: how Tony Abbott and Peta Credlin destroyed their own government, says Ms Bishop wanted to apologise immediately after the Choppergate scandal.

She was advised to make a public statement four days after the story broke but was told not to directly say sorry as it would be seen as admission of guilt, Ms Savva wrote.

It took Ms Bishop 15 days to finally apologise.
