Bookworm fulfils dream
OWNING a bookshop had always been in the back of Tom Howard’s mind.
On Saturday the dream came true as his new business, Collins Bookshop and ABC Centre, opened in Grafton Shoppingworld.
“During my career I have held many positions in education and thought it was time for a change,” Tom said.
“The opportunity to own a Collins franchise was advertised in The Daily Examiner and I just went for it.”
Tom hopes to continue his commitment to education by establishing a strong bond with the schools in the Clarence Valley through his new business.
Like many people who make the transition from being an employee to owning their own business, Tom said being his own boss was appealing.
“With my old job, I was travelling a lot and missed out on a fair few important family moments,” he said. “Now though I can be home at the drop of a hat, which is just brilliant.”
Tom is keeping the business family orientated with his whole family helping out in the shop. Friends are assisting, too.
“Everyone in the shop is my family so I want the shop to focus on the families of the Clarence Valley,” he said.
One such focus will come into existence in the New Year.
“During January we will be holding a story-telling session every Tuesday from 10.30-11am. We will also have a colouring-in competition, and prizes will be given out,” Tom said.
“To keep the parents happy, we will also be giving a two-for-the-price-of-one coffee voucher to use at The Coffee Club.”
Over time, Tom hopes to become more in tune with the wants and needs of the community and stock the new Collins Bookshop and ABC Centre appropriately.
