Boss happy with Magpies' trial

MAGPIES boss Ricky Binge said he was happy with his side’s performance despite the 28-16 NRRRL trial loss to Evans Head yesterday.

Last season’s wooden spooners showed brighter times are ahead with Ben Malone and Theo Woods both impressing alongside new recruits Joel Moss, Xavier Sullivan and Todd Cameron.

The match was played across four 20-minute quarters with Evans Head opting to interchange both their top side and reserves.

Lower Clarence however gave its senior team an early season fitness test by playing the entire 80.

“We wanted to play two games but we were short of numbers in the reserves who were away with a music festival,” Binge said.

“We were hoping to find out a bit about our depth but it was a good chance in the end to test the fitness of our players.”

The Magpies line up against Macleay Valley at Maclean on Saturday night.
