Bowlers strike as Westlawn pulls win from the flames

CRICKET: Jacaranda Hotel Westlawn has pulled off one of the great recoveries in Cleaver Mechanical Night cricket bowling stifling lines and lengths to defend a low 117-run total under lights.

Westlawn captain Brad Inmon refused to mince his words after his side "got out of jail” by reducing Tucabia Copmanhurst Clarence Valley Pest Control to 9-111 in reply, winning their Round 10 clash by six runs.

"It has got me buggered how we got away with that one,” Inmon said. "It seems the smaller the target we set, the better we bowl.”

It was Westlawn's elder statesmen in Rohan Hackett (2 for 7 off 5), Nathan Blanch (2 for 20 off 5) and Pat Vidler (2 for 15 off 5) that really stood up when the team needed it the most.

"Rohan Hackett was exceptional for us,” Inmon said. "He scored a duck in the first innings and you could see it had made him real bloody cranky.

"He bowled with real venom and accuracy. He got a wicket with his first ball, and was bloody pumped up.”

Zac Page was also precise with his lengths going for less than two runs an over as they strangled the Tucabia batting line-up.

But it almost was not to be with Tucabia captain Dan Cootes (37) and Jaye Yardy (38) putting on a strong 62-run third-wicket stand before the captain was run out backing up too far out from his crease.

The run out proved to be a match-turning moment as Tucabia went on to lose 5-20 in a mid-innings collapse.

"We were just trying to keep the score down but the match really turned at that moment,” Inmon said. "We really needed that win, it has kept us in touch with the top end of the table.”

Inmon said his side would go back to the nets to work on their batting before night cricket resumes next year.
