Brawling teammates' fines to be used to repay fans

FOOTBALL: English football club Preston North End plans to refund the club's travelling fans after fining the two players who were sent off for fighting each other during a game at Sheffield Wednesday.

Eoin Doyle and Jermaine Beckford had to be separated by teammates and opponents before being sent off by referee Scott Duncan in an incident labelled an "embarrassment” by manager Simon Grayson.

Preston chose not appeal against the red cards, instead fining them. That money will be used to refund Preston supporters who made the trip to Hillsborough.

Beckford and Doyle apologised and said they supported the decision to refund the fans' ticket costs.

"We apologise wholeheartedly for our actions at Hillsborough,” the players said on the club website.

"Our behaviour was not acceptable in any walk of life, let alone on a football pitch. We let down the management, our teammates and most importantly the supporters, who had spent a lot of money to support the team.”
