'Breastfeeding in public illegal' says TV Yummy Mummy

IT'S the show which has everyone talking, but new star of over-the-top reality series Yummy Mummies, Adelaide's Maria DiGeronimo, doesn't understand what all the fuss is about.

Focusing on the life of four wealthy mums-to-be, the Seven show has yet to go to air but a 90-second preview posted on social media - featuring the pregnant women arriving at baby showers in horsedrawn carts, receiving bouquets of $100 bills and buying Burberry bub clothes - has already sparked controversy.

Slammed for being "unrealistic" and "offensive" to women, the show's stars have been described by viewers as "vacuous", "unattractive" and "dumb", among more than 12,000 mostly negative comments on social media.

Ms DiGeronimo, 31, from a wealthy Italian family in Adelaide's northeastern suburbs, has since given birth and says she's not bothered by the hysteria surrounding the show.

"They've seen 90 seconds of my entire life. If you can judge someone on 90 seconds of their life, does that tell more about you or me," says Ms DiGeronimo, who has an arts degree majoring in psychology and education.

"I'm not out here to make people love me or hate me. It's not about the fame. I'm just being me. I'm going to say my reality to everyone's reality. I realise my reality may be different to others and anything I say is just my opinion.

"I've built up a thicker skin over the years, this is not new to me. My parents have worked so hard all their lives, always trying to give me the best ... sacrificing for me to have everything. It's been criticised in the past, or put in a negative light."

Ms DiGeronimo, who drives a Porsche Macan S with personalised MARIA numberplates, says her partner of three years, Signature Cut Barber Shop's Carlos Vannini, and her parents, who own a successful concreting business, were supportive of appearing on the show and unconcerned by the early negativity.

One of the trailer's most contentious scenes shows Ms DiGeronimo in a cafe watching a mother breastfeed, which is followed by her declaring: "Breastfeeding in public is illegal. You just don't do it."

Ms DiGeronimo says she didn't mean the statement literally and breastfed her own baby, just not in public.

"I didn't choose a place that was loud, rowdy, with men who could possibly even be intoxicated. If I would have done that, I'd have covered up, but that's my opinion and personal choice," she says. "I wanted a quiet, calm environment so we could bond and share that special moment together."

Whatever you think of the former teacher, she says you can't question her ability as a mother. "I'm madly in love with my baby and no one can take that away," she says.

"This is going to be a gift for my baby because she is going to be able to see everything I went through before she was born."
