Bridge drama ends well

A GIRL, 15, learnt the hard way about the dangers of jumping from the Grafton Bridge yesterday after she twisted awkwardly and knocked herself out in the water, witnesses said.

A group of teenagers were hanging out near the bridge just before 5pm and Jacob Hollingsworth, of South Grafton, was swimming with his girlfriend when the drama unfolded.

Jacob, who admitted backflipping from the bridge’s walkway earlier in the afternoon, said he heard something and turned to see the girl twisting on her way to the water.

“She just didn’t move,” he said.

Jacob said some other boys including Kane Flanders, Luke Wood and Greg Foley jumped into the water as he swam to the girl.

“We all tried to lift her out of the water and took turns draggin her to the side,” Luke said.

“Water was coming out of her mouth, she was blacked out and then she spewed,” Jacob said.

Nearby witnesses called triple-0 and police and ambulance responded but the girl refused transport to hospital. Police were seen speaking to the teenager but no further information was available late yesterday.
