Bridge the next step in Pacific Hwy upgrade

A MAJOR step toward the Pacific Hwy being a motorway standard dual carriageway between Englands Rd and Heatherbrae by the end of 2017 has been taken.

Major works have finished on a new bridge across the Wilson River as part of the Oxley Highway to Kundabung section of the Pacific Hwy upgrade.

The new bridge forms part of a 9km deviation from the existing highway across the flood plains east of Telegraph Point and is on track to open to traffic next year in conjunction with the entire 23km stretch of the Oxley Hwy to Kundabung upgrade.

Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker inspected the bridge with Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the Wilson River bridge was an impressive project.

"The new Wilson River bridge crosses both channels of the Wilson River and the southern end of Dalhunty Island, and is 524 metres long and 23 metres wide," Mr Hartsuyker said.

"It will have a minimum navigation clearance height of six metres at the southern channel and eight metres at the northern channel."

Other Pacific Hwy projects south of Coffs Harbour due for completion in 2017 are the 20km Warrell Creek to Nambucca Heads upgrade and the 14km long Kundabung to Kempsey upgrade.

The Federal Government is providing close to two-thirds of the $820m funding toward the Oxley Highway to Kundabung section of the Pacific Hwy upgrade.
