Brisbane set to bid for 2028 Olympic Games

FRESH from its success as host city of the G20 World Leaders' Summit last year, Brisbane is set to make a bid for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will put the bid on the agenda at the next South East Queensland Council of Mayors meeting early next month, saying the entire region needed to back the proposal.

While it is early days for the plan, Brisbane has already won the support of the Australian Olympic Committee's John Coates who described the River City as the "natural choice" as host city.

"I think that Brisbane would be the obvious choice for the next Australian Olympic bid," Cr Quirk said.

"As Australia's new world city, I think we've demonstrated that we are capable of staging a world event - staging it safely, successfully and with attention to detail."
