Broke Aussie athlete posts himself home from UK in a box

IN 1964, Australian athlete Reg Spiers arrived in England.

But when it came to returning home to Australia, Spiers decide to post himself the 21,000km home in a wooden box.

The Mirror reports the cash-strapped javelin thrower came up with the unique idea when he needed to get back to Adelaide in time for his daughter's birthday.

Spiers had been working at an airport to earn enough money to fly home but he was mugged and all his money stolen.

He told The Mirror he said: "I've come up with this mad scheme to get back to Australia in a box. Who can say it won't work? Let's give it a shot." 

Spiers then stripped naked and climbed into a wooden box to journey as air freight across to the other side of the world.

But that was only the beginning of Spiers' adventures and now a movie has been made about him and his incredible journey.

The trailer for Out of the Box was released in December last year.
