Broncos must act now to finally end nightmare

The time has come for the Brisbane Broncos to finally end this nightmare and start rebuilding towards a brighter future.

The Broncos have never been at a lower point since their creation in 1988.

They have encountered hurdles, ebbs and flows over the past 32 years but nothing has rivalled the current sustained decline of a once mighty franchise.

The Broncos are running second-last on the NRL ladder and are in grave danger of collecting the wooden spoon.

Enough is enough.

Chairman Karl Morris and departing chief executive Paul White must swallow their pride, stop the rot and finally address the future of besieged coach Anthony Seibold.

Delaying a review until the end of the season will only continue to fuel this fire.

Seibold has been banned from coaching the Broncos for the next two weeks after breaching the NRL's coronavirus biosecurity protocols to attend to a personal matter in Sydney.

Seibold should not be criticised for his decision to put family first. The intense scrutiny on Seibold and the Broncos would undoubtedly be impacting those closest to him.

At the same time, Seibold has also become the victim of disgusting online rumour mongering which has spread like wildfire in the digital age.

For all its positives, the world would be a better place without social media and Seibold's struggles have been compounded by the ridiculous personal attacks.

The rumours have become more fanciful by the day and are bordering on ludicrous.

From a football perspective, it has become painfully clear that Seibold is not the right person to coach the Broncos and only a miracle will see him remain at the helm of the club in 2021.

It is unfair on everyone, particularly Seibold, for this to keep playing out as it has.

So why will Brisbane bosses not pull the trigger, let him get back to his life and move on from this failed experiment?

For financial reasons, he is not going to resign and forfeit around $2.4 million in wages.

The Broncos must negotiate a payout for the final three seasons of Seibold's five-year contract if they are to sever ties.

The Broncos have $14 million in the bank but the board could be reluctant to do that due to the financial hit the Broncos have copped during COVID-19.

It will also require the likes of Morris, White, club legend Darren Lockyer and Brisbane's board members to admit they got it wrong in sacking Wayne Bennett to appoint Seibold.

That would be a significant blow to the egos of Brisbane's heavy-hitters but it is the only way out of this mess.

As it stands, Broncos fans are watching the club's administration do little to turn around the worst period in Brisbane history.
