Brough defends role in ‘Ashbygate’

A USUALLY tightlipped Mal Brough has publicly defended his involvement in "Ashbygate".

The LNP candidate for the Federal seat of Fisher set the record straight on his dealings in the ongoing political saga at the Australian Christian Lobby meet the candidates forum on Tuesday night.

"Ashbygate" is the name given to the series of events that led to the resignation of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Peter Slipper.

During the forum's question time, Mr Brough was asked by the audience "Justice Rares found your involvement in Ashbygate to be unlawful, that your recorded saying you will do it all again if you were only helping James Ashby. Why did you ask for and send on to media extracts of Peter Slipper's diary?"

"I'm glad you asked that question, I don't normally get that opportunity to answer this question," Mr Brough said.

"First of all, never did I forward anyone's diary to anyone. Secondly, this matter is currently before appeal which the media often doesn't reflect upon.

"The full bench of the Federal Court is hearing two appeals and I have absolute faith that the court will find the correct decision.

"When I said I'd do what I did in the Ashby case again, I stand by that, and the day I stop doing that is the day I do not have the right to stand before you as potential candidate or member for Fisher."
