Buccaneers turn heads at Rugby 10s tournament

RUGBY UNION: Yamba Buccaneers have finished third at a preseason rugby 10s tournament In a positive turn for the rejuvenated outfit.

The side narrowly missed the play-offs for first and second at the  tournament in Evans Head, recording a win against Bangalow, a draw with Murwillumbah and a last minute loss to Lennox Head.

The tournament was utilised as a pre-season hit-out by captain-coach Lee Everett and as a chance to see what his team could string together ahead of the 2016 Far North Coast Rugby Union season.

"It was just a hit-out to blow off a few of the off-season cobwebs," Everett said. "We have a lot of new blokes on board this year so it was a good chance to throw the ball around and get to know each other's playing style."

One of those new players is Ben Lomond-bred Tom Mulligan who returned to the North Coast this year after a stint in Sydney rugby.

The powerhouse forward made a great start to his career with the Buccaneers at the weekend and will be looking to continue that this weekend as Yamba host the Glen Innes Rugby Club.

"Tom brings a fair bit of size and power to our side which is good," Everett said. "We have a fairly small side in comparison to other teams so he is a welcomed addition to our ranks."
