Budding scientist’s eureka trip

YOU could forgive aspiring scientist and St Patrick's College student Jasmine Colley for still smiling a month after a dream trip to London.

The Year 12 student was one of 10 chosen to attend the London International Youth Science Forum. She enjoyed more than a week of scientific inspiration as she visited some of the world's most respected scientific organisations and heard from the world's top scientists.

The science behind identifying King Richard III's bones was a highlight of the adventure, but she said the most important part of the trip for her was a visit to the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jasmine, who has a passion for particle physics, said a lecture from a leading scientist at the centre only confirmed her aspirations for her future career.

"That was always what I thought I wanted to do but that reinforced it."

The recognition Jasmine received as being one of just 10 Australians accepted into the London forum was further bolstered when she learned on her return that she would be a recipient of the Peter Doherty Award for Excellence in Science and Science Education.

She will be presented with the award at Customs House in Brisbane on November 6. Her international adventures followed a two-week visit to Sydney for an International Science School from July 1.
