Lifesavers have a simple message for beachgoers

AFTER a drowning at Yamba last week, surf lifesavers have a simple message for those heading to the beach or coast to celebrate - please swim between the red and yellow flags.

Australia Day is one of the busiest days of the years for volunteer surf lifesavers.

Last year more than 500,000 people went to the beaches around NSW in the days leading into the public holiday. There were 626 rescues and 685 first aid treatments administered on January 24 and 25, before48 rescues on Australia Day.

Forecasts suggest a respite from the heat of the best part of a fortnight, with rain and wind possible, but lifesavers are still gearing up for a busy few days.
