I'm dreaming of... living on St Bees Island

LIVING on your own island is something people usually only dream about.

But it will soon become a reality for the lucky buyer who picks up part of an island off Mackay that is for sale.

The four hectare residential lease on St Bees Island, about 30km off Mackay, is for sale for almost a million dollars.

It is an opportunity that doesn't come along every day, according to Mackay and Marina Real Estate licensee Kim Griffiths.

"We have never sold an island lease before," he said. "It's not often and that's why it's hard to put a value on this.

"I think everyone has entertained that idea at some stage, to detach themselves," he said.

The residential lease for sale includes a house and two cottages, a 100,000-litre water supply, a power generator, cold room, mooring and safe anchorage offshore for a term of about 20 years.

Mr Griffiths said the current lease owners, a group of five people, were ready to sell. The lease is going for $985,000.

So far, there had been a lot of interest, particularly from the wives of boaters cruising north.

"It's gaining a bit of interest at the marina office ... from the yachtsmen and a lot from their wives too," Mr Griffiths said.

"They think the yacht is getting a bit small and think 'maybe if I live on an island, Barry would be okay with that'."

Mr Griffiths believes the island would suit two grey nomad couples who were willing to become almost self sufficient.

However, living there wouldn't exactly be a quiet life, he said, as there was still mobile service and a phone connection.

"It's not the sort of island where your privacy is obtained by the fact you're far enough away from the mainland but you're not too far."

St Bees Island is mostly national park, owned by the State Government and is home to one of the country's healthiest koala colonies.

It's also next door to Keswick Island.
