Byron Bay take prawns home to the beehive
BASKETBALL: Despite temperatures rising to sweltering levels at the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre, Byron Bay once again proved their dominance of the North Coast courts.
The Beez club were well represented when it came down to the pointy end of the Junior Prawn Bowl carnival hosted by the Yamba Trawlers at the weekend and managed to clinch victory in all three age divisions.
While the Trawlers and Grafton Vikings missed out on a grand final berth on the day they represented the region well throughout the carnival producing some of the highlights of the competition.
Trawlers, with standouts Malik Elabassi and Bayden Toyer, narrowly missed out on the under-14 grand final after succumbing to the might of the Beez. In an all-Byron affair the number one team dominated their club mates to win the title 42-12.
While in the under-12 division the Trawlers' girls and boys sides were left to battle in the third-place play-off match after Byron and Bellinger Braves booked grand final spots, with Beez clinching the final 43-9.
In a tantalisingly close under-16 age group, Trawlers were unlucky to miss the grand final after Byron snatched semi-final victory in the dying minutes 36-26.
Byron went on to defeat Kempsey 37-11 in the final.
Trawlers committee extended a special thanks to Kyle Brunker and Rebecca Wall, who refereed eight games each on the day, helping the event to run smoothly as well as referee coordinator Andy Lothian.
