Northern Rivers speed camera top revenue raiser in NSW

REVENUE raiser or life saver, the controversial Ewingsdale speed camera has cemented its place as one of the state's highest earners.

In the last financial year alone, the Hinterland Way camera clocked up about $1.5 million in fines, accounting for almost half of all speeding fines issued in the Byron Bay postcode.

As a result, the 2481 postcode ranked eighth highest in the state for speeding offences, according to figures released under freedom of information laws.

Centre for Road Safety executive director Bernard Carlon said a decision had yet to be made about what would be done with the speed camera once the Pacific Hwy upgrade was fully operational.

The recently released speeding offence figures show the Byron postcode collected a whopping $3.1 million worth of speeding fines, issued in 2014/15.

It's the eight consecutive year the postcode has ranked in the state's top 10 worst regions for speeding offences.

NSW Shadow Minister for Roads Jodi McKay said the figures showed the Baird Government had been ineffective in slowing down speeding motorists in Byron Bay.

"The focus should be on slowing speeders down, not ripping money out of their pockets," she said.

But Northern region highway patrol cluster supervisor Senior Sergeant Chad George said since the installation of the Ewingsdale speed camera, the number of fatal and serious car crashes had reduced significantly.
