Cabarita claim honours at Turners surf comp

EIGHT of NSW's hungriest boardriders clubs duked it out on the weekend as part of the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle Series III NSW Northern State Round at Yamba on Saturday with Cabarita Boardriders taking top honours.

Surfers were greeted with wedgy two-to-three foot peaks at Turners Beach as they attempted to seal themselves a position in the National Final, which takes place at Cronulla in January 2016. In a tight-knit battle that came down to the final of the Teams division, Cabarita, Byron Bay, LeBa and Coffs Harbour all went hell-for-leather in an attempt to top the accumulative scoreboard.

However, thanks to some massive turns from Chippa Wilson (Cabarita) and Danny Wills (Byron Bay), both clubs were able to take the top two spots respectively and earned themselves a spot in the National Final, while Le-Ba and Coffs Harbour had to settle for third and fourth position.

"It's been a while since I put a jersey on, but I'm stoked that I did it," said Cabarita standout Chippa Wilson. "The feeling of surfing for your club is unreal and if I was surfing for myself then I probably wouldn't have done the event.

"Cabarita is such a tight-knit club and to see everyone surf as well as they did puts a massive smile on all our faces. We thought of ourselves as the underdogs a little bit, so to get on top and take the win feels awesome."

The 2014 Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle Series NSW Northern State Round winners Le-Ba Boardriders put up a valiant fight in the overall exchange and managed to claim the runner-up position in the Teams component, but ultimately fell short by 325 points overall.

The Milwaukee Heavy Duty Hack award was presented to former World Championship Tour surfer Lee Winkler from Coffs Harbour Boardriders for posting a massive 9.57 scoring wave in the Teams division. Participating clubs included: Le-Ba (Lennox Ballina), Halftide, Saltwater, Sawtell, Byron Bay, Cabarita, Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour.

The Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle Series III is the country's biggest grassroots boardriders event series with $110,000 in prize money.
