Cadbury launching low calorie chocolate bar
CADBURY is launching a low calorie Dairy Milk bar with 30 per cent less sugar, that claims to taste exactly the same as the original.
And in even more good news for chocoholics, the confectionary giant plan to sell the new version alongside the normal one for the same price, The Sun reports.
Cadbury's Europe boss Glenn Caton said a team of 20 scientists and choc experts have been working on the product for two years, experimenting how to keep the same taste while cutting sugar, and using no artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives.
They have reformulated the bar by replacing some of the sugar with a type of fibre that has the same structure, which means they can use less sugar but keep the texture of the beloved original chocolate bar.
This is a different method to the one Nestle used for its lower calorie bars, which have lead the way in sugar reduction in confectionary products. They instead altered the structure of sugar molecules to contain air which meant they could use less of the product but the tongue still sensed the same level of sweetness.
Nestle began launching lower sugar versions of treats early last ear, starting with KitKat and then Aero and Smarties.
Sugar in chocolate varies but milk chocolate is typically around 50 per cent, white around 60 per cent and dark below 40 per cent and as low as zero.
The low-sugar version sadly won't go on sale until next summer while the firm works out how to produce it on a mass scale.
