Cafe celebrates a year of that special feeling

THE four partners and 13 staff of Grafton's Heart and Soul Wholefood Cafe have a lot to celebrate after just a year in business.

In a little more than 16 months the two couples, Shelley and Evan Kirke and Rachael and Marcel Koning, have turned an empty shop into a business fulfilling all the ambitions of its owners.

"Our customers often tell us there seems to be a special feeling in here," Shelley said.

It's a feeling the couples have created themselves.

With the help of local tradies, the two families worked from June to late October last year getting the shop ready for its opening on Jacaranda Queen Crowning Day 2013.

"We still had to do an all-nighter before we opened to have everything ready," Rachael said.

One of the ambitions the owners had was to bring the latest trends in healthy and clean eating to Grafton.

"We use as much locally grown organic or chemical free food as possible," Rachael said. "If we can't get that, we use the best ingredients we can find."

"We have a lovely lady at Jackadgery who supplies us with a lot of our food," said Shelley.

The cafe has recently switched to the All Press brand of coffee, renowned for air roasting its beans.

"It's different from the drum roasting and seems to give the coffee a cleaner taste and feel in the mouth," Shelley said.

The cafe's online presence has helped fulfil another ambition.

"It was one of our dreams to be a destination cafe, where people came for our food and the experience," Rachael said.

"It's starting to happen. We're getting people in who heard about us in Brisbane and Byron.

"When they're travelling down the highway, they come into town to get their good, whole, clean food and coffee rather than go to Maccas.

"That's pretty good for Grafton."

Heart and Soul Wholefood Cafe is at 124a Prince St, Grafton.

FLORAL EXTRA

Every second Thursday there's a special treat at Heart and Soul when pop-up florist Flowers by Bonnie drops in.

Cafe co-owner Rachael Koning said she had always wanted to have flowers in the cafe.

The florist will pop up in Heart and Soul today.
