Cahill reveals boos spurred him on

FOOTBALL: Tim Cahill says his winning goal in the FFA Cup final was a good response to the Sydney FC boo boys who targeted him before the game.

A typical Cahill header in the 52nd minute proved the decider in a 1-0 win for Melbourne City over the Sky Blues at AAMI Park for the club's first trophy since its inception as Melbourne Heart in 2009.

Born in Sydney, Cahill said the cat calls from the opposition fans spurred him on.

"Tonight was just special because just beforehand - for no reason - the (Sydney) fans were singing about me and it plays and plays in your head all the time, when the fans sing negative stuff towards me, and I thought 'this is my chance',” he said.

"When it hit my head - it's the story of my life... people will say he's done it again but that's why I play. I play for moments like that.

"Maybe for the other 50 minutes it was difficult to get on the ball and do whatever but that's not my job. My job is to be in the box.”

City skipper Bruno Fornaroli turned heads on and off the field.

The Uruguayan won the Mark Viduka Medal for the player of the final before dropping the f-bomb in his acceptance speech.

In his broken English and reading off cue cards, Fornaroli thanked coach John van't Schip, the staff, players and fans before throwing away the cards and adding: "Come on City. And f*** off.”
