Cahill stars as Westlawn finish rebuild year strong

CRICKET: Emergent junior Aidan Cahill expertly steered Westlawn to their first win in Cleaver's Mechanical Night Cricket giving captain Jason Rainbow a rare reason to smile.

The towering 13-year-old, who has come on in leaps and bounds in Premier League this season, started the night on the right foot snaring the opening wicket after replacing Rohan Hackett at the southern end.

Cahill went on to claim a second wicket in his second spell to finish the innings with two for 22 off five overs as Tucabia finished their 30 overs at 7-149.

Not content with his contribution with the ball, Cahill then opened the run chase for Westlawn opposite Brad Inmon as the pair set a stable foundation with a 76-run opening stand.

"Aidan deserved a chance at the top of the order,” Rainbow said. "He got us off to the perfect start, showed a full array of shots and really put the pressure back on Tucabia's bowlers.”

Cahill (31) and Inmon (38) smashed 54 runs off the opening five overs, setting the tone for the innings as middle order batsmen Rainbow (30) and Rohan Hackett (20) continued the rot to help Westlawn pass the total inside 20 overs.

"A win is a win and for us they haven't been near frequent enough,” Rainbow said. "It has been a bit of a rebuilding year for Westlawn and wins like that certainly give us a bit of confidence as we look toward next season.

"There will be no finals cricket for Westlawn this year but we can walk off the pitch with our head held high now.”
