Call to ban sacking local workers for 457 visa holders

EMPLOYERS should be prohibited from sacking local workers to hire new foreign workers on 457 visas, a Senate inquiry into visa work has urged.

The recommendation was one of 33 from the lengthy inquiry, which was triggered by worker exploitation scandals involving farm labour hire firms and 7-Eleven.

It called for a specific prohibition to prevent employers sacking Australian workers and hiring 457 visa workers for the same role.

The committee recommended companies hiring skilled workers on 457 visas be forced to also hire an Australian tertiary graduate in the same business.

The report called for the government to ensure all workers in Australia on visas issued under recent free trade agreements were "afforded the same rights and protections ... as an Australian worker".

It also urged a raft of changes to the way foreign workers are treated by employers, government and workplace insurers.
