Calling junior queens
FROM meeting a Marie Claire model to starring in a fashion parade, Ashleigh O’Connor can vouch for the fun – and glamour – of being involved in the Junior Jacaranda Quest.
Ashleigh, 14, is last year’s Junior Jacaranda Queen.
With nominations opening for the annual contest this week, Ashleigh is encouraging other young ladies, aged between 12 and 14, to get involved.
From running fundraisers and making speeches to attending balls, crowning nights and fashion parades, Ashleigh summed up the experience as ‘a lot of fun’.
She said highlights included being a part of the annual fashion parade alongside the senior Jacaranda Queen candidates; posing for a photo next to the Marie Claire model who visited the Youth Parade, and; decorating the Jacaranda Queen float together with the senior party.
“It was a full social calendar,” she said.
Ashleigh’s mum Jodie agreed. “Ash got to experience and see things she hadn’t ever before,” Mrs O’Connor said.
“It’s nice for them (the Junior Jacas) to find out about their town.”
Girls aged between 12 and 14 years at the time of judging (in October) can apply. The first 10 fully completed nominations will be accepted.
Junior Jacaranda candidates are judged on deportment, etiquette, presentation and public speaking, and vie for the titles of Junior Queen and Princess.
Quest director Amanda Finucane said it was an opportunity for candidates to grow and develop their skills ‘in a fun way with the support of a peer group and the festival committee’.
Some of the events already pencilled in for the Junior Jacas are a pamper afternoon on June 20, a trivia night on July 24, and the Jacaranda fashion parade on September 17.
Nomination forms are available at Westpac Grafton in Prince Street. For more information on the quest, phone Amanda on 0417 243 286.
