ACTOR Johnny Depp is in Queensland as principal photography began this week on Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The fifth instalment of Disney's multi-billion dollar film franchise sees Depp reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Also returning is Oscar winner and Toowoomba native Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa.

Cairns native Brenton Thwaites is one of the new additions to the cast.

The fifth film, scheduled for release in 2017, sees a down-on-his-luck Sparrow pursued by deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem).

Queensland beat out several other states as well as Mexico to host the production, which is expected to contributed $100 million to the local economy.

According to Screen Queensland, 75 percent of the more than 850 crew members currently working on the film are Queenslanders.

The majority of extras and additional crew still to be hired for the film are also expected to be locals.

The film, directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning, will be shot over the next five months on the Gold Coast at Village Roadshow Studios and at a purpose-built set in the hinterland, as well as other Queensland locations.
