'Captain Courageous' pulls out all the stops in heat
LCCA CRICKET: After 35 overs at the crease in tough temperatures, it was no surprise Iluka captain Brendan James was a little more than weary-legged.
Batting on a two-paced wicket, James anchored his side's innings with a defiant 79 from the opener as Iluka posted an ultimately match-winning 137.
But it was an innings that took its toll on the Lower Clarence handyman, who struggled with the intense heat out in the middle.
"I can hardly walk, the legs went to jelly, and I have got blisters on my feet from all the running,” he said.
"I was calling out for a drink after four overs, I got rid of the helmet around the eight-over mark and the thigh guard followed soon after. It was just too hot.”
James said he was timing the ball well, with most deliveries finding their way to the centre of his bat.
"It's only taken me all season to get the timing right,” he said. "I think I had 40 runs all season, so to get 80 in an innings was great.”
With 137 on the board, James was looking to his strong pace attack to do early damage and they quickly obliged, bowling out Harwood for 96.
The attack was led by a three-wicket haul to Dean Bartlett (3 for 19 off 8) and backed up by wily veteran Dave Cowan (3 for 18 off 6).
"We just knew the goal was to take early wickets,” James said. "We have had Harwood plenty of times before, and quite often they are about 100 for two.
"The boys have been putting in with the ball all season and this weekend was no different for them.”
While the win has kept Iluka within touching distance of top spot, James said his side just had to keep winning games.
