UPDATE, 3.30PM: A couple returning home from their Easter holiday were lucky to escape unharmed after they were involved in a two vehicle accident on the Pacific Hwy near Cowper today.

Jake O'Donnell and Shania Mertanadi were on their way home to Lake Macquarie after spending the long weekend in Byron Bay when the van they were travelling in hit a ute as it attempted to cross two lanes of southbound traffic at Telegraph St.

The male driver of a ute suffered non-life threatening injuries in the collision, and was taken to Grafton Base Hospital.

"We were literally just saying how lucky we were having missed all the holiday traffic on the way home, but I'm glad everyone is ok," Mr O'Donnell said.

Post Easter traffic slowed to a crawl as one lane of southbound traffic was closed for close to two hours as emergency services responded to the accident, which occurred around 12.40pm Monday afternoon.

Traffic and Highway Command Leading Senior Constable Nick Dixon said it was fortunate no one was seriously injured.

"It's a timely reminder for people to slow down on this notorious section of roadway," he said.   "We always urge people to slow down and exercise diligence and patience."
