Fatal car accident closes Lawrence Rd

9.15AM: POLICE have launched an investigation following a fatal crash at Southgate this morning.

About 7.50am, emergency services were called to Lawrence Rd after reports of a crash.

Officers attached to Coffs Clarence Local Area Command arrived to find two vehicles had collided at the location, trapping one of the drivers.

One of the vehicles also caught fire as a result of the crash. Fire & Rescue NSW also attended and extinguished the blaze a short time later.

The trapped driver, a woman in her early 20s, died at the scene.

The 25-year-old male driver of the second vehicle was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, before being airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital with a fractured pelvis and broken leg.

A crime scene has been established at the location and will be examined by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Lawrence Rd, near the intersection of Short Road, remains closed while police carry out their inquiries at the scene.

Traffic diversions are in place; however drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.

9.00AM: LAWRENCE Rd is closed in both directions after a crash involving at least two vehicles this morning about 5km south of Lawrence.

Police, ambulance, RFS, and SES crews are all in attendance.

People making the southward journey from Lawrence to Grafton are advised to take the ferry and Pacific Highway.

Council crews have closed Lawrence road in northbound direction, diversions are in place via the Ulmarra Ferry.

The road is expected to be closed for some time.
