Busy start to day for RFS with two separate vehicle fires

UPDATE 1pm: It was a busy start to the day for the Rural Fire Service, who attended two separate vehicle fires in the space of a few hours this morning.

RFS Gulmarrad and Fire and Rescue Wooloweyah attended a caravan fire on the Pacific Hwy just north of Ferry Park at Maclean at about 10.15am.

RFS Clarence Valley district manager Superintendent Stuart Watts said on arrival, the caravan was totally engulfed with fire, with the vehicle towing the caravan unhitched.

"The highway was temporarily closed in both directions while the fire was contained, but subsequently caused another small grass fire, which was easily contained," Supt Watts said.

At the same time as the caravan fire, the RFS received a call of a car fire at a residential property at Brooms Head, which required RFS Brooms Head and a second Gulmarrad crew to bring under control.

"That kept us on our toes for some time," Supt Watts said.

"It's not very often that we get two vehicle type incidents at the same time."

Supt Watts said no other assets were damaged in the fires.

UPDATE Noon: Traffic is now getting back to normal at Maclean after a caravan fire closed both lanes earlier today.

The burnt-out remains of the caravan have been placed on the back of a tow truck to be taken away and the clean-up is complete.

UPDATE, 11.10AM: TRAFFIC has re-opened in both directions at Maclean under stop/start traffic control.

Motorists are asked to be patient and alert to control measures in place.

EARLIER: THE Pacific Highway is currently closed at Maclean due to a caravan fire.

According to Live Traffic NSW, the incident between Cameron St and Harwood Bridge started about 10.15am.

Emergency services are attending and motorists are asked to use an alternative route.

Northbound traffic is being diverted onto Cameron St, with southbound motorists urged to use Yamba Rd.
