Caravan park thefts

THERE are some not very happy campers in Evans Head thanks to a wave of brazen thefts in the Silver Sands Caravan Park.

As campers slept in their tents, thieves broke in and stole alcohol, wallets, money and even wrapped Christmas presents right across the park.

Tracey Matthews and her family from Burleigh Heads have been camping at Evans Head for the past 18 years.

While they have lost the odd esky, this is the first time anyone has actually broken into their tent by unzipping the door and taking Ms Matthews' handbag near where she was sleeping.

"I remember hearing someone trip in the tent which woke me up," she said.

"They must have heard me stir because I got up and there was my handbag, and the kids' bags all strewn up the hill.

"We lost two iPods, cash and three pairs of gold earrings."

Campers Chantelle Honeycombe and Mark Claydon of Brisbane also lost wallets and phones even though they were tucked under the bed.
