Carnival brings out best in competitors

SWIMMING: A glorious day, fierce competition and wonderful comradeship all went into the melting pot on Saturday and produced one of the best AIF Far North Coast carnivals held in many years.

The host club, GDSC Swimming Club, was assisted by many past members and their assistance was greatly appreciated.

Grafton swimmers put in great performances and can hold their heads high.

Toni Ensbey, Ian Goodman, Steve Donnelly, Andrew Madden, Bruce Durrington and Amanda Nutt were all placed in their relevant age group championships and Damien O'Mahony won the 50m Men's 45-49 yrs freestyle championship.

David Moon was our most successful swimmer taking first place in the 50m Men's Open freestyle championship, the 50m Men's Open backstroke and the 50m Men's Open butterfly.

Jenny Vickery, Amanda Nutt, Doug Ensbey and Wilson Burns collected second place in the 4 x 50m 200 years plus handicap relay and Bruce Durrington, David Moon, Steve Donnelly and Damien O'Mahony also collected second place in the 4 x 50m Men's Medley relay championship.

David Moon and Bruce Durrington also teamed up in the 50m x 30m Men's Brace relay 50 plus years and came away with second place.

Seven Grafton swimmers made it to the semi-finals of the 50m freestyle handicap event. They were Terry Barnes, Kieran Lynch, David Moon, Bruce Durrington, Steve Donnelly, Damien O'Mahony and Andrew Madden with Terry, Andrew and Steve progressing to the final. Steve won the final with Terry scoring second place. Amanda Nutt also qualified for the 30m freestyle handicap final but was unplaced.

The 10 x 50m championship relay was the second last event and Grafton's team of Richard Sear, Terry Barnes, Ian Davis, Ian Goodman, Kieran Lynch, Andrew Madden, Steve Donnelly, Bruce Durrington, Damien O'Mahony and David Moon managed third place but then went on to take first place in the 10 x 50m handicap relay.

At the presentation dinner the point scores were announced and first place went to Twin Towns on 80, second place to Southport 76 and Grafton with 61 was third. Minor places went to Bellingen 29, Nerang 23, Lismore 19 and Ballina 12.

Wykes Tyrepower Cup - 30m B B & B - 1st Toni Ensbey, 2nd Debbie Smith, 3rd Max Kroehnert.
