Carnival fun for young and oldies

WINMILL’S Campers showed class and consistency to win the Grafton Cup carnival held at the weekend.

Last year’s trophy holders Gold Coast Travellers pushed them all the way in the final but went down 3-0.

Seven teams entered the competition but Winmill’s and Gold Coast finished one and two after a gruelling round-robin competition with some teams playing six games in one day.

This, as well as quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final, meant some teams played nine games across 24 hours. But it was Winmill’s who stood triumphant after playing the weekend undefeated.

In the Jacaranda Plate Final, Australia wore down a very tired Summer Sirens to finish 2-0 in front at the final whistle.

Both teams had a number of players on the sideline barely able to walk at the end of the game but the game is not about winners, but survivors.

Winners or losers, but teams then headed to the canteen knowing they gave it their all and had fun while at it.

Misfits and Odd Balls played off in the Clarence River Spoon Final. After scattered showers had fallen on the carnival all weekend, the sun burst through to increase the humidity and really test all of the players. Misfits won the game 2-1 but not before Odd Balls gave them a scare along the way.

Congratulations to all of the players as the tournament was played in a competitive spirit but with respect for their fellow players.

We would also like to thank the SOS executive and the workers in the canteen who worked tirelessly all weekend to keep players fuelled and hydrated. Another successful weekend.

There are now only three weeks of competition remaining so if you would like to enter a team in the winter competition, please complete a team entry form at the canteen.

That also means we are not far away from our end-of-season party on April 1.

To see a full season draw, look at team photos, check out the competition rules or find more information about the competitions log on to www.graftonsos.org.au.
