Teen gets bond for child porn

A CASINO teenager who downloaded 171 pornographic images of children from the internet onto his computer has been placed on a two-year good behaviour bond after a magistrate deferred sentencing him.

Aged 17 at the time of the offences, the teenager, now aged 18, pleaded guilty in the Lismore Children’s Court to possession of the child pornography in October last year; and using the internet to access child pornography between January 1 and October.

He was arrested by Australian Federal Police following an online internet investigation to identify persons of interest involved in child pornography offences.

Magistrate Robyn Denes said the teen used particular ‘search terms’ to find not just pornography, but child pornography showing children in sexually explicit poses.

But she agreed with submissions by defence lawyer Ralph James that the majority of images his client held fell into the lowest two levels on the Copine scale, used toassess levels of seriousness.

Ms Denes said it was people using the internet, such as the offender, to find child pornography that drove the market in child abuse.

“Whether he gave any thought to the abuses and surely obvious harm these children were subjected to, I have not heard evidence about that,” she said.

Ms Denes convicted the teenager of both offences, but deferred passing sentence, placing him on a two-year good behaviour bond instead.
