Cakes with a touch of class
CATHY Burridge of Grafton says she can thank her two daughters, Saminda and Tominica, for putting a "foot in her back" to give her the courage to start her own small business in cake decorating.
"One is my marketing manager and the other is my project manager," she said.
"They help me with the computer and paperwork, Facebook and ordering supplies online."
Cathy's Cakes and Puddings makes everything from the traditional wedding cake to contemporary birthday cakes to complement any theme.
"It all started in high school with a wonderful cooking teacher, Mrs Vincent," she said.
"After that I was doing it for family and friends for many years but then I got too busy at work - I was a cook at a nursing home and I was too worn out when I got home so I stopped.
"Now I've stepped back a bit and I'm just the tea lady so I have more time for cake decorating."
Although she's never counted all the hours she puts in, Cathy estimates it takes about a week of work to complete a wedding cake.
All decorations are carefully handcrafted, mostly using fondant icing.
On Sunday May 4 she'll join more than 40 other Clarence Valley crafters, makers, bakers and artisans for her first experience as a stallholder at the Valley Made Boutique Markets.
But first Cathy has more than 100 cakes to bake and decorate.
Market organiser Carly Mill said she hoped to build on the success of the last one, but there would be some improvements and being a week out from Mother's Day, a different focus.
"This time round we'll have a kids' corner with face painting and a local playgroup helping kids to create Mother's Day crafts," she said.
"And we have TillyMash performing their music live while the markets are on."
