Ceiling tiles repair could close pool again for a month

LOCALS eager to take a dip in the South Grafton indoor pool again may have to wait for up to a month while work is done to repair loose tiles on the ceiling.

The Grafton Lifestyle Centre which houses the pool re-opened last month after being closed for the summer while $500,000 of maintenance work was carried out.

The opening was short-lived though, with heavy tiles falling from the newly refurbished ceiling, causing council to close it again last week for safety reasons while the problem was assessed.

On Friday Clarence Valley Council deputy general manager Des Schroder said a team of engineers, with the help of a scissor-lift would make a detailed inspection of the roof.

In any case, swimmers hoping to use the facility are out of luck for the moment.

"It's looking like it'll have to be closed for an extended period, maybe up to a month - hopefully it'll be quicker than that but we'll know more on Monday morning," Mr Schroder said.

"We want to get it open again as quick as possible but obviously we have to make sure it's safe first - those tiles weigh quite a bit.

"One option is to operate without the tiles but that causes all sorts of heating issues - it's a viable option but probably not the preferred one - people swimming there want to swim in comfort," Mr Schroder said.
