Champ Golovkin too good for Geale in the US

LEADING into his WBA and IBO middleweight title fight against Gennady Golovkin in New York yesterday, Daniel Geale (pictured) promised he would shock the world.

But it was the Tasmanian who received the shock, rocked by an overhand bomb from the unbeaten Kazakh in just the third round, sending him to the canvas. Geale rose unsteadily to his feet, but was clearly dazed, and that was enough for referee Mike Ortega to end the fight.

Geale had already been cut on the eye in the opening round. The Aussie showed commendable courage, but Golovkin's power punches were simply too hard to handle, with the man known as "GGG" notching his 17th-straight knockout victory.

Golovkin's professional record moved to 30-0 (27 by KO), while Geale's record dropped to 30-3 (16 KOs).

Aussies Blake Caparello, Jarrod Fletcher and Sakio Bika will all fight for world titles on consecutive weekends in the US in August.
