Charlie Bindon scoops the pool

HUGH Dougherty can't remember what sort of records he has set.

Fair enough; he's had a few.

But there are two that his cousin Charlie Bindon can recall.

At least there was two that he can recall.

Earlier this month, soften-spoken Bindon, 10, knocked off St Mary's Primary School's 11 years boys' 50m butterfly record, set by the Grafton-bred ironman in 1994.

At the school carnival Bindon clocked in at 45.18secs, more than a second ahead of Dougherty's old mark.

To show it wasn't a fluke Bindon claimed the 11 years boys' 50m freestyle record of 34.45secs, also set by Dougherty 17 years ago.

“I don't know what sort of records I had,” Dougherty laughed when informed of Bindon's record-setting exploits.

“It's good that someone has come along and beaten it.

“The records are there to be broken. It doesn't worry me too much and he must be a pretty good swimmer.”

While Dougherty plied his trade at the Grafton Swimming Club in his early years, ultimately working his way up to a runner-up finish in the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman Series, Bindon is happily code-hopping for now.

The only way he would adopt a more serious approach to his swimming, he said, is “if it fits in with the other sports”.

Cricket and swimming have just wrapped up for Bindon.

Time for tennis, hockey, rugby and soccer.

“He loves to surf and go to the beach so he's in the water a lot,” mum Meg said.

“He knew he might have had a chance to break the 50m freestyle record and the other was just a bonus.

“He was very excited about it all.”

Last week Bindon claimed seventh at the NSW State Catholic School Championships in Sydney.

He has only been swimming for five years and Meg puts her son's success down to early childhood learn-to-swim classes as well as squad training in the past two years.
