LATEST: RESIDENTS of the Caloundra West estate where an eight-year-old boy was hit by a truck this morning say the intersection where it occurred is notoriously known.

Police are investigating after the boy suffered serious head injuries and had to be air lifted to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital after he was hit by a truck on Indigo Rd while riding his electric scooter about 9.30am.

Tim, who wished to only be known by his first name, said trucks and cars often didn't slow down on approach to the intersection as there were no stop signs, give way signs or a reduced speed limit.

He said this, combined with a large number of kids crossing the road to the park, made it a recipe for disaster.

"It's a stupid intersection," he said.

"It's a really, really bad design. There should be a stop sign.

"Young hoons fly around the corner, the trucks drive straight through and kids don't look - it's like Russian roulette.

"How we haven't lost a dozen kids in the last year I'll never know."

Tim said the family who lived right on the intersection was fearful that a car or truck one day was going to end up in the house.

"She's moved all her family into the rooms towards the back of the house because she's scared," he said.

Tim was hoping that this incident would prompt a change to the design of the intersection to prevent it happening again.

"It's terrible that it takes something like this for something to happen," he said.

"If nothing happens now there's something wrong with the system."

The Forensic Crash Unit was on scene earlier today and investigations are continuing.
