Child protection on track

MORE needs to be done to protect children and the NSW Government is now on the right track according to Todd Yourell, general manager of Lismore-based Child and Adolescent Special Programs Accommodation.

His view follows a meeting with the Minister for Family and Community Services, Pru Goward, in Sydney this week.

This week the Ombudsman released a scathing report on the state of child protection systems in NSW.

The report found a quarter of the most serious cases of child abuse and neglect were being closed without an investigation.

Mr Yourell agreed there was still a long way to go, but felt the moves being proposed by the O'Farrell government were right.

Mr Yourell was part of a contingent of welfare agencies who met with Ms Goward to provide feedback and help set the direction of a new advisory committee to improve child protection.

The forum was an opportunity for the government to listen to service providers' advice about the direction of future policy, Mr Yourell said.

The government had committed to hand over the case management of children who were in “out of home care” from the Department of Community Services to community-based or non-government organisations by next year.

“(Non-government agencies) are better placed to provide these services and can provide better results, and will free up many more resources to dedicate to early intervention and child protection.”
